Note | EXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 4: Part four of my extra special sales comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. CYMBIOLA NIVOSA OBLITA: This specimen is a conundrum for the Volutidae specialist to resolve. I offer it here under the subspecies 'oblita', yet this rare form, whilst retaining the overall morphology of oblita, (with dramatically reduced peripheral nodes), exhibits a pattern and overall colour tending more towards the larger species irvinae and hughmorrisoni. It is also far more solid than typical oblita, with greatly thickened shell walls. It is probably deserving of at least a form name to separate it from other related species and varieties. I have seen only a handful of this form, (and none recently collected), in comparison with many hundreds of typical Broome oblita. Definitely for the Volutidae specialist to research, and determine its true taxonomic placement. Size: 62.1 mm (length). Grading: F++++. Data: Broome, Western Australia, Australia; upon upon intertidal sandflat at extreme low tide; littoral; 1992. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London. |
