NoteEXTRA SPECIAL SALE - PART 2: Part two of my extra special sale comprised entirely of exceptional specimens from my private collection, representing highlights of my collecting and dealing career. Another opportunity to acquire outstanding and unique seashells from one of the world’s pre-eminent collections. UMBILIA HESITATA: A monumental specimen of the now extremely sought after, ultra-heavy, dark colour form from the southern end of the species range. Very difficult to obtain, coming only from old collections. As this form inhabits a deep, muddy, detritus-laden substrate, perfection is not possible, and the current specimen exhibits the typical inclusions and nacre blemishes of all examples. It is also a very old specimen, having been trawled in 1959, and has, understandably, lost a little sheen. Yet it remains a ‘must have’ for the advanced Umbilia collector, as this southern form constitutes part of the full range of variation of the species. Dark chocolate-caramel terminals. Profuse yellowish tan dorsal maculae; background hues of pink; and caramel marginal maculae, which, where partially submerged by the heavy callosity, create nebulous areas of pale lavender. Exceedingly solid and heavy for size, with characteristic ultra-thick, yellow-cream ventral callosity. Pronounced dorsal ridging. Definitely for the advanced Umbilia specialist who requires a giant representative of this unusal, extreme southern form. Size: 110.4 mm (length). Grading: F+. Data: D’Entrecasteux Channel, off Bruny Island, Tasmania, Australia; upon mud/sand/detritus substrate; 120-160 m; trawled; 1959. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
