SPECIAL SALE - PART 5: The fifth and largest instalment to date of my current special sales, constituted entirely of exceptional shells from the top end of my stock and private collection, again all at a 1 Euro start. --------- ALCITHOE BENTHICOLA: This is a magnificent volute. A spectacular, ultra-large museum piece of this extreme deep-water endemic New Zealand species. Collected over forty years ago and superbly curated ever since. Characteristic lightweight shell. Always with a little typical substrate discoloration to dorsum due to its thick mud habitat. One restricted axial growth disruption to dorsum, but otherwise exemplary condition for such a giant. Perfect axially aligned form - no malformation to spire as often seen due to damage to early whorls. Perfect outer apertural lip and siphonal canal. Glassy, mammillate protoconch intact. Almost impossible to obtain at this size and quality now, and only from old collections. Definitely for the Volutidae specialist whose collection yet lacks a top quality giant of this majestic species. Size: c.245mm (length). Data: East of Alderman Islands, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand; upon mud substrate; 600-800m; trawled; 1972. Provenance: JES private collection; Melbourne/London.
